Debbie Harry may be in her seventh decade, but that hasn’t stopped her from continuing to make bold fashion statements, donning everything from oversize varsity jackets and skull-print dresses to space-age sunnies and silver fringed anoraks onstage and on the red carpet in the past year.

The 71-year-old Blondie singer proved her style-icon status again Tuesday night while performing at New York’s Bowery Ballroom, standing onstage while a tailor took a pair of scissors to her jeans — turning them into instant cutoff shorts.

Harry (along with Blondie bandmate Matt Katz-Bohen) took the stage in honor of the debut of Levi’s 505C jean, a style inspired by the 505s that the singer wore in a now-iconic image by photographer Richard Young from a 1978 performance in Tokyo (above). Levi’s used the photo — along with a shot by punk photographer Roberta Bayley of the Ramones all wearing the jeans — as inspiration, scouring their archives and vintage sources worldwide to find original 505s from the era. The design team then used the vintage pairs as patterns for the updated version, slimming the silhouette just slightly on the straight-leg, mid-rise style ($98-$148).

“Blue denim has always been truly American,” said the singer, who performed hits like “Call Me,” “Heart of Glass” and “Rapture” (including the rap) at the event, which also included a DJ set by Zoe Kravitz and Lolawolf bandmate Jimmy Giannopoulos.
