WORLD MUSIC

Discovery Channel Europe will broadcast a three-part alternative TV history of popular music beginning this month, entitled Alternative Rock’n’Roll. Hosted by Debbie Harry (right), the programme will air first on 24th September and examine how the rest of the world took to rock’n’roll. The show reveals how it spread from the West to India, Russia, Latin America, Africa and Asia. It reveals how Fela Kuti (below right) married 26 of his backing vocalists in a single day; Gilberto Gill of Brazil talks about his arrests and exile for being a hippie; there’s a look at how the Beatles influenced music worldwide; how fashion was affected by music from the 60s to the 80s; and pop music’s impact on world cinema is also assessed.
